昔の作文（'02 1月）

今日振り返るのは、大学3年次（1月）の映画論のレポート。
この授業は、アメリカ映画を見て、その背景を分析するというもの。授業は英語で行われた。
この年は70年代の映画を中心に見た。
何を見たっけ。
「俺たちに明日はない（原題："Bonnie and Clyde"）」
「ミーン・ストリート（原題"Mean Street"）」
「影なき狙撃者 (原題："Manchurian Candidate"）」
あと、題名は忘れたけど、ヒッピーのフェスティバルの一日（意味不明（笑））というドキュメント映画も見た。
自分では見ないような映画ばかりだったので面白かった。
授業の最後にはレポートが課され、各自が自由に70年代のアメリカ映画を一本選び、10ページで論じるというものだった。
私は「スケアクロウ（原題："Scarecrow"、アル・パチーノ主演）」を選び、レポートを提出した。
以下はそのレポートの最初の部分。

American perspectives seen in Scarecrow

A film reflects the real society and its history, ideal, and philosophy vividly. We can discover American way of life and thinking through seeing films. Let us see how strongly the nation’s characteristics appear in one film, Scarecrow (1973).

The American value system has included worshipping hard work and richness. It has been part of the American Dream that if you only work hard enough, you can make it. On the other hand, society really looks down on people who don’t make it. As a result, If you’re not successful or if you’re just a medium success, you feel like you’re failing. There are winners and there are losers, and everybody would rather really be a winner and that somebody else be the loser.

This American view of point is reflected in the world of the country’s big film industry. Traditionally, almost all heroes in American films are courageous, good-looking, and successful in reflection of people’s ideal until the late 1960s. However, the tacit rule was broken by the release of a series of so-called “new cinema” films, such as Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Easy Rider (1969), Midnight Cowboy (1969), and Five Easy Pieces (1970). These films were born as challenging of traditional American values.

内容は、ニューシネマ前後について語っているようだ（笑）。
ニューシネマ以前のアメリカ映画（60年代まで）では、典型的な正義のヒーローが主人公であったが、70年代になるとアウトローなヒーローが現れてきた（らしい）。
題材にした「スケアクロウ」の主人公（アル・パチーノ）も、刑務所からでてきたばかり。
レポートの続きを読むと、映画のあらすじを紹介し、いろいろ分析している。
監督のニクソン批判にまで言及してある。
もう忘れたけど。
さて、内容はさておき、英語について見てみると。
へたくそだ。
言いたいことはだいたいわかるけど、表現がなあ・・・
和英辞典を駆使して書いた英文という感じがする。
今回は、いちいち英文を取り上げて修正する気にもなれない。
まあ、この時の英語力でこの内容のレポートを書くのは大変だったんだよね。
たとえて言うなら、四角い部屋をどんなにがんばっても丸くしか掃けないようなもの。
しかも10ページ！
今書くとしても大変だろう。
翻訳と違って、内容を自分で考えなきゃいけないし。
でもまあ苦労したのも懐かしい思い出だわ。
ところで、これまで大学3年以降の英作文を見てきたが、大学１、２年次の英作文フロッピーも発見した。
自宅でフロッピーが見れないのでまだ見ていないが、おもしろいだろうな♪
